Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions I get often all answered in one place!

Where did I learn to blow glass?

I learned glassblowing at Ball State University, where I trained in the hot shop working with molten glass, traditional techniques, and modern design. Since then, I’ve refined my skills through live glassblowing demonstrations, art residencies, and teaching around the world—from Alaska to Italy—immersing myself in global glassmaking traditions. If you’re interested in learning, many local studios and glassblowing schools offer beginner classes where you can safely experience the craft firsthand.

Can I commission a custom glass piece?

Yes! I offer custom glass art commissions for clients looking for one-of-a-kind pieces. Whether you want a personalized glass sculpture, functional glassware, or a unique design inspired by your vision, I work closely with you to bring your ideas to life. Custom glassblowing allows for endless creativity in color, form, and style—perfect for gifts, home décor, corporate displays, or special occasions. To start your custom glass commission, simply reach out with your concept, and we’ll design something that’s truly yours.

How long have you been blowing glass?

I learned to blow glass at Ball State University, where I first stepped into the hot shop and fell in love with the craft. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills through studio work, live glassblowing demonstrations, art residencies, and teaching around the world. My journey has taken me from local studios to cruise ship hot shops, combining years of hands-on experience with continuous learning from some of the best in the field.

How long does it take to become a glassblower?

Becoming a skilled glassblower takes years of practice, patience, and hands-on training. Most beginners start with introductory glassblowing classes at local studios or art schools, learning the basics of working with molten glass, shaping techniques, and safety. With consistent practice, you can create simple pieces within weeks, but mastering advanced glass art, intricate designs, and professional-level craftsmanship can take five to ten years or more. Every glassblower’s journey is unique, but dedication, time in the hot shop, and guidance from experienced artists are key to turning passion into expertise.

Do you collaborate with other artists?

Yes—nearly every piece I make is a collaboration. Glassblowing is a team-driven art form, often involving a gaffer and one or more assistants to manage the heat, timing, and complex steps of shaping molten glass. While I design and lead the creation, the process itself thrives on teamwork. From passing tools to adding components at the perfect moment, collaboration is built into every stage, making it rare for a piece to be made entirely alone.

What’s your favorite piece you’ve made?

One of my favorite pieces I’ve made is from my Practicing Failure – Bit by Bit series—a sculptural goblet created during a live cruise ship demo. The original plan failed mid-process, but adapting in the moment turned it into something entirely unique. It captures why I love glassblowing: the blend of precision, improvisation, and embracing imperfections as part of the art.
